A video installation and community project by Clémence B. T. D. Barret

borderline.athens is the Athenian chapter of the series of videos “borderline”.

It is a questioning about women status and gender identity with urban women across the world. The first video was created in 2013 with an Indian woman along with a performance, then followed by other videos in 2017 with a Chinese woman, in 2018 with a Moroccan woman and with a Thai woman.

This chapter investigates some aspects of the complex female identities and status in Athens.

From intimate processes with Athenian women from various origins, ages and walks of life, the video installation has emerged.

At the exhibition opening on September 9, 2021 at 20:00 the Athenian musicians Chacha la lionne Yema Odi Hola, Doxie and Merel from Congo, Haiti and Belgium will bring their cultural traditions together. Chacha la lionne Yema Odi Hola and Djo Matondo, also an Athenian musician from Congo, will perform songs from their countries of origin. Anna Magni will sing popular rebetiko songs.
Clémence B. T. D. Barret is a self-taught visual artist, who considers herself transnational. She’s based in Athens.
Migration, identity, otherness, freedom, ugliness, and loss are some favorite notions she has been exploring. She has often used her own experiences as filters to enter, investigate and unsterstand these notions in new geographies and communities. Her expressions are composed of varied media — video, photography, sound, movement, objects, paintings, monotypes — combined or not.
Her series of videos borderline has been shown in various exhibitions and video art festivals. Amongst them: “Not so crazy girls”, Espace futur, Paris, France and “Genius has no gender” Blech - Raum für Kunst e.V., Halle/Salle, Germany in 2020 - Saigon Experimental, A. Farm, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam in 2019 - ‘WO/’, Vane gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK in 2018 - Videomeja, Museum of Contemporary art Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia in 2017 - Festival International d'Art Vidéo de Casablanca & Instants Vidéo, Galerie Marsam, Casablanca, Morocco in 2015 - Les Instants Vidéo, La Friche Belle de Mai, Marseille, France and Milan Box gallery in 2014 - ACT, National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore, India in 2013.
